On Tuesday, President Lee Myung-bak aimed to smooth things over after his proposal for 
a "unification tax" caught many off guard. 

Lee said in his Liberation Day speech that reunification between North and South Korea 
was a sure thing, and a tax would be a proactive way to cope with the costs. 

However, he clarified on Tuesday that bringing up the idea was just to open the floor to 
discussion on the issue, and that the tax was not a done deal.

이 대통령은 8ㆍ15 경축사에서 통일은 반드시 오며, 그날을 대비해 이제 통일세 등 현실적인

하지만 그는 오늘 ‘통일세’ 제안과 관련해 통일에 대한 마음의 준비를 하자는 것이지, 
지금 당장 국민에게 과세하자는 것은 아니다”라고 밝혔습니다.
