New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged state legislators to levy a tax on soda.
He added that making soda more expensive would make it less desirable for people 
to consume and would reduce health problems afflicting New Yorkers like obesity and diabetes.
Also, the tax money raised would help plug the state's shortfalls in health care 
and education funding.
On the other hand, some New Yorkers have said that taxes would not have an effect 
on people’s health, and that the tax would kill jobs by hurting retailers such as grocers.

마이클 블룸버그 뉴욕시장은 탄산음료에 대해 '비만세'를 징수하는 방안을 제안했습니다.
그는 "탄산음료의 가격이 비싸지면 건강을 위협하는 탄산음료의 소비감소로 인해 뉴욕시민의 
비만과 당뇨병이 감소될 것"이라고 주장했습니다.
또한 그 세금은 건강과 교육관련 예산을 확보할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
그러나 이에 반대하는 뉴요커들은 “세금이 사람들의 건강과는 아무 연관이 없다"며 
“이것은 식료품점과 다른 소매업자들에게 큰 타격을 줄 것’이라고 말했습니다.
